Pharmarcade – Poem Submission by J Matthews

Jason Matthews‘ career in the textbook trade ended without his editor ever realizing that he padded the word-search puzzles with the lyrics to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, written phonetically, diagonally, and backwards.

PHARMARCADE

He’s all mouth,
running that same maze
forever
sucking down the dose
that’ll get him to the next.

Forever
running from his ghosts;
chasing the next dose
into a corner.

Forever
hoping one more try
will give him the strength
to live a little longer
maybe meet the right girl
and settle down.

He’s all mouth,
no pockets, not even
a gummy quarter.
He’s backed into a corner
when the ghosts catch up.
