Unsaved Post – Poem by Jessica Gawrych

Unsaved Post

erase, undo, backspace, delete
me i want to
edit post, publish and delete it
everything right now is
a bunch of untitled documents
Mac OSX asks for an update almost every week,
why do i need to update so often?
can i just pause
hold please
there is a blinking tracker waiting for letters
to be pressed into a word doc
type and tell and delete escape
shift alt control life and
task manage, force quit
a slow running machine
power off restart update
me i want to
refresh page to see it change in real time
can i change in real time?

now hiring: young hungry college student looking to intern
bring coffee
must know how to run Excel
and data process things
contact me to contact you
tell me about your work exp.
empty trash and delete folders
will pay in thoughts
(som1 task manage my life 4 me plz. )

How closely should our online (intangible) life cohere with our IRL (tangible) life?

I think that is largely up to each person’s discretion. It depends on what kind of life one wants to lead. Whether or not there is a right or wrong way to balance the two worlds is difficult to say. Some people keep the two very separate and distinct, while others can make a living and personality by uniting the two. I think our generation is leans towards the latter trend more frequently, though.

I really like this poem, it makes me think about how there is a certain syntheses arising between man, machine, and nature. These three forces are usually at odds, placed against each other. Perhaps what “New Modernism” entails is the fusion of these three entities and how well (or poorly) they interact in today’s world.

But Phillipe! Are you saying that Man is necessarily separate from Nature? Without nature we’d be nothing. At most, a person would be reduced to a consciousness in a vacuum located in some trans-universal realm or dimension. And what about machine? Would machine exist without Man? I think not. We can construct and deconstruct aspects of life but we cannot deny the common origin of things.

commonality is a good way of looking at it. but you of all people should know that in classical times it was always art vs. truth and after romanticism it became art vs. science (nature). modernism proposed the art of the machine. can this New Modernism we plan to lobby for somehow be the culmination of the three?
